DETROIT - On April 25, at the 13th Annual Trumpet Awards, General Motors and GM Goodwrench will present the Community Spirit Award to the Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County ( Fla. ), Inc.

The Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County, Inc. is a small, community-based, voluntary health organization founded to improve the quality of life for persons with sickle cell disease or trait and members of their families, and to educate the public about the blood disorder.

As part of the Community Spirit award, GM Goodwrench, a GM Service and Parts Operations (SPO) brand, will present the Sickle Cell Foundation with a 2005 GMC Savanna to be delivered by Schumacher Pontiac-Buick-GMC of Lake Park, Fla.

Incorporated in 1980, the foundation runs two major programs – Sickle Cell and Healthy Start Care Coordination. The Sickle Cell program serves approximately 350 families. The Healthy Start Network serves approximately 150 pregnant or post-partum women and their infants. Both services provide individual and family assessment, identification of community resources, initial and follow-up health and/or human services referrals, life skills counseling and case management.

"We are honored to receive this award from General Motors," said Claudia Smith, president, Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County, Inc. "This van will help us expand the reach of our services by providing transportation for our clients that do not have their own transportation."

For the past six years, the Community Spirit award has been given to charitable organizations that have made enormous contributions to their community and that have demonstrated exceptional provisions in inspiring individuals to achieve success.

"Community Spirit award recipients are organizations devoted to serving the needs of their community," said Duane Miller, executive director, GM Service and Parts business channels. "The dedication of the Sickle Cell Foundation to providing services to families affected by sickle cell and mothers trying to give their children a healthy beginning exemplifies the definition of true community spirit."

Previous GM SPO award recipients have included the Community Ties Youth Leadership Program of Lemon Grove, Calif. for their youth development programs and the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce for their efforts in encouraging learning through interactive experience.
